Science and Engineering Agency Empowers Oyo Youths, Reels out Plan to stop Importation of Artisans





In a bid to stem the spate of unemployment amongst youths in Oyo state, Not less than 100 youths resident in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital on Monday, benefitted from the Federal Government’s Youth Empowerment Programme.


The program, which is a component of a national initiative by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) is aimed at empowering youths, providing them with new skills and improved operationing procedure.

NASENI Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive, Prof. Mohammed Sani Haruna, said President Muhammadu Buhari had directed the organization to equip youths to reverse the trend of importing artisans while speaking in Ibadan where plumbing equipment, tools, and diagnostic kits worth several millions of naira were given to the beneficiaries.

He claimed that the goal included providing enormous modern skill acquisition trainings for craftsmen so they could meet challenges around the world.

He claimed that the training was intended to reduce overreliance on artisans from nearby nations.

“President Buhari’s intention is the prosperity of the youths and job satisfaction so they could take their plumbing work seriously and move to the highest level of efficiency and professionalism in plumbing.

Artisans from neighbouring African countries today are taking over the few occupational jobs available in the built environment and in construction industry.

“The president has empowered NASENI to lead the nation to a manufacturing economy and undoubtedly this type of skill development is key pre-requisite, that is – competent workforce.”

“The skill development in many specialized areas of need is ongoing and the trainees are expected to train others.

All 100 Oyo State participants, who were carefully chosen following due diligence, are now starting their businesses with sophisticated equipment.

“They have automatic membership of a platform of NASENI for continuous knowledge and experience sharing in the dynamic area of their chosen occupation,” he added.

According to the announcement, Musiliudeen Olaide Akinremi, the chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Science Research Institutes, thanked Buhari and NASENI for their assistance on behalf of the inhabitants of Ibadan.
