OYSG to Abolish FGM Practices Within the State

Oyo State Government has gone against the concept of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) within the borders of the State. The State Government further added that it has no tolerance for the life-threatening action of mutilating girls, which is seen as a cultural symbol — this is part of the high amount of challenges that threaten the existence of the female gender in Nigeria.


Dr Millicent Ogun, Oyo State representative of the Center for Population and Reproductive Health (CPRH), acknowledged this statement at a public declaration against Female Child Harmful Traditional Practices at communities at in Odo-Fufu, Akeetan and Ojongbodu in Oyo West Local Government Area of the state, which had traditional and religious leaders in attendance.


He emphasized the absolute necessity to abolish the action of FGM, saying it adds to the records of challenges that women and girl children encounter in the country. He further added that “the various breakages and the aftermath of untold consequences and challenges accumulating daily with the highest records call for concern.”

According to his report, FGM is one of the leading reasons for broken homes affecting females evaluating the shocking reasons for divorce, marital disappointments, difficult and delayed labour during childbirth, lack of sexual urge, genital health risks and many other disorders in the affected female private parts, he also added that this carries a great percentage of reasons for separation among affected spouses according to reproductive health professionals.

Dr Bushrat Oloso, the state president for the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), had something to say “to end female genital mutilation, we must do these three things, educate the entire society on the aftermath, consequences, ill-health attached, disadvantages and untold challenges unknown to all, secondly, information and advocacy projects and raising voluminous public awareness on what victims of FGM face daily in their marriages.”

She pointed out that the importance of advocacy visits and consultation with community leaders, health workers, circumcisers, health educators, traditional and religious rulers and traditional birth attendants is to create exposure. While some youths have been trained as FGM community champions and surveillance teams, that will execute a door-to-door campaign to households towards abolishing FGM.

Alhaja Omowunmi Ogungbenro, Coordinator of FOMWAN Project 2020, presented the communities with FGM community champions Certificates including traditional chiefs of these communities, in the course of delivering the scope and the review of the project.

The government and FOMWAN, Oyo state chapter with backing from United Nations Population Funds (UNFPA) and the Center for Population and Reproductive Health (CPRH), collaborated to execute this programme.
