Legendary Yoruba Comic actor; Babatunde Omidina, fondly known as Baba Suwe has reportedly died today at age 63.
Adesola Omidina, one of Baba Suwe’s daughters, announced his demise.
She said: “This is to announce the sudden death of my father, Babatunde Omidina, the legend and rare gem, Baba Suwe on November 11, 2021. Details and other arrangements will be announced shortly.”
Baba Suwe was well-known for his comedic appearances in Yoruba-language Nollywood films.
In 2018, he fell ill, prompting other Nigerians, notably Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, to contribute money to help pay for his medical treatment abroad.
He was born on August 22, 1958, on Inabere Street in Lagos Island, where he grew up, but he is originally from the Ikorodu local government area of Lagos State in southern Nigeria.
Omidina had his elementary education at Jamaitul Islamia Primary School in Lagos and Children Boarding School in Osogbo before attending Adekanbi Commercial High School in Mile 12, Lagos State, where he earned his West African School Certificate.
Omidina began acting in 1971, but shot to fame after appearing in Obalende’s film Omolasan. He rose to prominence after appearing in Olaiya Igwe’s 1997 film Iru Esin. He starred in and produced a number of Nigerian films, including Baba Jaiye Jaiye, which starred Funke Akindele and Femi Adebayo, the son of famous actor Adebayo Salami.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency charged him of cocaine trafficking in 2011, but the Lagos high court of law ruled that the accusation was unfounded and defamatory.
