UI professor advocates for the Posting of NYSC Corp Members To Ecowas States

Prof. Oka Obono, a lecturer at the University of Ibadan, has urged the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to deploy corps members across ECOWAS member states, using the provisions of the ECOWAS free movement.

His reason is that it will reduce unemployment among the youth, and also curb the increasing rate of social vices among them.

The Professor said this on Thursday during his lecture titled “Strategies for Sustaining the NYSC in a Changing World”, delivered at the 2021 NYSC Top Management Retreat held in Suleja, Niger state.

He urged that all stakeholders should embrace expansion strategies that would be of benefit to the youths.

“Expand operations to West African region thereby reducing internal graduate unemployment and reduce pressures on the Nigerian labour market”, he said.

The Professor, who said inter-ethnic distrust is the root of the county’s problems praised Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim for his exemplary leadership style since resuming office as the 18th DG of NYSC.

He also called on stakeholders to adopt a high level of diplomacy and advocacy to positively engage the uneducated youths who are potential threats to societal peace and national development.

The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, in his reaction said the retreat was a strategy for the scheme’s appraisal of its operations by the top management.

Further saying, it would also help to develop new strategies that will lead its operations in a changing world.

“We will intensify more on our proactive disposition to official engagements to move the scheme forward”, he said.
