The Academic Staff Union of Universities, have threatened to embark on another strike action should the APC led Federal Government of Nigeria choose not to honour the Memorandum of Agreement, MoA, signed with the union in 2020.
The Ibadan Zonal Coordinator of the Academic staff Union of Universities; Professor Oyebamji Oyegoke stated this on Friday in a chat with newsmen in Ilorin, on the sidelines of the observance of Human Rights Day.
“Selective treatment of matters in dispute instead of a comprehensive approach would no longer be acceptable to our members,” Prof. Oyebamji stated.
He said, ” We shall no longer take the issue of welfare of members for granted. Any treatment of the MoA of 2020 that precludes its full implementation and rejection of IPPIS, will be incomplete.”
Professor Oyegoke lamented that “some of the union members have not been paid salaries since December 2020 and they are still working. It shows commitment on our part.”
He claimed that the union’s demands are reasonable and comprehensive in the interests of the country’s educational and developmental goals.
He warned that if nothing is done, “we would be forced to withdraw our services until reason prevails.”
Professor Oyebamji stated that the federal government has shown its aim to disgrace the union’s collective will to defend university education from ultimate collapse, and that ASUU cannot bow to this callous attitude.
He praised prominent Nigerians’ involvement in the topic, but insisted that “it is about deeds, not thoughts,” and that “these are not new demands.”
ASUU is demanding full implementation of the 2020 Memorandum of Agreement, which includes funding for public university revitalization, payment of earned academic allowances, withheld salaries, and promotion arrears, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, inconsistencies in IPPIS payment, and the University Transparency Accountability Solution, UTAS.
