Afenifere, a Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, has slammed President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to introduce Farm Estate in states across the country, arguing that it is outdated, illegitimate, and therefore should be opposed by state governors.
Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the group’s head, made this declaration during a telephone interview with a major news outlet (Nigerian Tribune). He claimed that if the federal government wants to promote farm estates, state governors with civil liberties to distribute all lands should be allowed to do so, warning that the Buhari administration should be reminded that “he can’t force it on states unless the governor of the state accepts it.” We do not live in a dictatorship, but in a democracy.”
Pa Adebanjo stated that the federal government has always used various diversionary tactics to push open grazing on states, and that its new proposal to build farm estates across the country should be criticized and condemned completely.
The Afenifere leader insisted that the federal government failed in its attempt to establish RUGA colonies across the country and that states should not be forced to establish farm estates, noting that the Land Use Act gives state governors the authority to manage and control all lands in their states.
The senior statesman continued, criticizing the federal government’s emphasis on restoring non-existent grazing ways saying: “It is on weak ground and the position is unconstitutional. That is why he doesn’t want to do restructuring. The Land Use Act is a constitutional position. So, he can’t make it. He can’t force it on any state. Buhari has no power under the constitution to force open grazing on any state.”
