Popular Nobel laureate; Prof. Wole Soyinka, has reportedly paid a sympathy visit to self acclaime Yoruba nation agitator; Mr Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, on Sunday at the Seme border en route to Cotonou, the capital city of the Republic of Benin.
The playwright was surrounded by a crowd while waiting to complete immigration formalities, according to the Punch newspaper, and was constantly asked where he was going.
Meanwhile, it was said that the renowned writer and essayist responded that he was with Igboho to “break the Muslim fast with him.”
When questioned on how neither he nor Ighoho is a Muslim, Soyinka stated that it didn’t make a difference.
He went on to say that he had hoped to meet Igboho and sympathize with his situation.
“Ramadan is as excellent as any other season to exhibit non-denominational solidarity,” Soyinka said.
Prof. Banji Akintoye, the leader of the Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide Umbrella Body of Yoruba Self-Determination Groups, was also there.
It will be recalled that Soyinka requested the government of the Republic of Benin to free Igboho so that he may continue his journey, stressing that he had committed no crime against Nigeria, during a media appearance in Lagos in August last year.
In Oyo State, Igboho had campaigned for the Yoruba nation to fight the oppression of Fulani ranchers.
On July 1, 2021, gun-toting Department of State Services personnel attacked Igboho’s residence in Ibadan, Oyo State, killing two and arresting 12 of his assistants, according to reports.
The activist eventually fled to the Republic of Benin, but was apprehended by the International Criminal Police Organization at the Cadjehoun Airport in Cotonou on their way to Germany on July 19, 2021, together with his wife, Ropo.
Ropo was eventually released, and Igboho faced accusations of illegal migration, so he requested refuge in the West African country to avoid extradition to the United States to face claims of stockpiling weaponry, which he denied.
As of March 2022, he has been released from custody in Benin Republic on two conditions: he would not hold any rallies and would not be allowed to leave Cotonou.
