The Father of late Adewale Owoade, Kolawole Owoade, appeared before the judicial panel on Thursday, where he narrated how officials of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) slaughtered his son.
Owoade was directed in evidence by his counsel, Diekola Rufai when he appeared before the Oyo State Panel of Inquiry on Police brutality.
The father said the police unit shot his son in the back with the bullet penetrating through his stomach and intestine.
The plaintiff remembered the incident occurring in January 2006 when their neighbour, one Lasunkanmi, accused Adewale of stealing recharge cards.
Lasunkanmi invited the police officers to search the house where the Owoades lived with other tenants.
“Adewale panicked, ran out of the room and was shot by an official of SARS called Kola. The SARS officials also followed us to the hospital he later died”, the father explained.
The death certificate, medical report and receipt of other expenses incurred by the family were acknowledged as exhibits by the panel. Owoade further added that the shock of the whole event has led to the deceased mother lying on the sick bed. He appealed for fairness in the matter.
The father sued for N50million in damages for the surgical operation on his wife and other payments incurred before the death of his son.
The prosecuting counsel, Matthew Oje, informed the panel that after the occurrence, SARS hampered all efforts of the family to seek justice.
Justice Badejoko Adeniji (rtd), The panel chairman, has adjourned the matter until April 14, 2021.
