More than 30 candidates were screened on their eligibility to be the next Alaafin. Of Oyo Kingdom in the first round of the screening exercise, which concluded today.
Representatives of the Atiba Local Government, led by the Chairperson, Alhaja Kafilat Mojisola Olakojo, are present to observe the screening, which is being conducted by all members of the Oyo Traditional Council (Oyo Mesi), led by its Chairman and the Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yussuf Akinade Ayoola Layinka 1.
Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin of Oyo’s director of media and publicity, claims that the vetting, which took place in the historic Palace of Oyo, has so far been peaceful since armed members of the Amotekun and the Police from the Atiba Division mounted security to ward off intruders.
Ten candidates were screened each day, one after the other, beginning at 10 am. After the screening, each candidate came to the location with two witnesses to sign an undertaking.
Durojaiye said, “The contestants arrived one after the other to the palace and were accompanied by some of their relations. They interacted mutually and embraced one another devoid of ill feelings, rancour and animosity.
“So far, more than 30 aspirants have been screened.
“All the contestants screened are getting excited, as they expressed satisfaction at the exercise”, he noted.
The screening process’s initial phase was completed today, September 8, 2022. Due to the Jumat prayer, there will be no screening on Friday. The second and final part of the film will instead start on Monday, 12th, and run through Thursday, 15th, 2022.
