Oyo Residents laments High Rent, Petitions Makinde to Stop House Agents from Extorting Citizens

Residents and immigrants in Oyo state are decrying the growing trend of unconscionable extortion by house agents in the state, particularly in Ibadan stating that activities of these agents should be immediate looked into.

According to a statement issued by the petitioners through the Commissioner of Land, Housing, and Survey, they urged Governor Makinde to regulate the activities of these agents in the state as soon as possible in order to avoid future fracas.

The statement partly reads: “The Oyo state government under the auspices and leadership of our astute, God-fearing, focused and assiduously working Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde should please as a matter of urgency through the office of the Commissioner of Land, Housing and Survey help control and mitigate the extortion of the so called house agents in Oyo state, as they pose unbearable charges on the good people of Oyo state especially on the new people who as a result of good governance in Oyo state, find themselves around here and they want accomodation to settle down”.

Condemning the unreasonable increment of agent charges in the state, the petitioners lament that “A house rent of N150, 000 will be going with agent fee of about N70, 000 to N100, 000, this is a pure act of corruption and extortion at its greatest form; which of course we all know the governor frowns against act of wickedness, theft and extortion”.

However, the petitioners have expressed optimism that an investigation will begin shortly, restoring normalcy to the state’s housing affairs.
