Oyo Govt Gradually Phase Out Diesel Powered Street Lights, Commences Installation of Tribid System

The Seyi Makinde PDP administration of Oyo State has kick-started the installation of a Tribid System to power street lights within the state.

The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Hon Seun Ashamu while speaking on the need to phase out diesel power stated that the LightUp Oyo project will now switch back to the Tribid system, which included a grid, inverter, and gas generator for support as agreed with the developer, to make it more available, dependable, and effective throughout the state.

The commissioner explained that the installation of the main fuse, which pulls power from diesel was a makeshift focus of the Governor ‘Seyi Makinde-led administration to turn on the lights in order to cut crime rates throughout the state and create a more friendly atmosphere.

According to him, the Light-Up Oyo project was intended to be powered by a Tribrid energy source, which consists of a grid, an inverter, and gas support.

“While we took delivery of the LED fittings and cables arrived; unfortunately, COVID-19 caused delays in the arrival of other key components to be used for the project. We had a decision to take: delay the entire project or derive immediate value by putting the lights on using in-country diesel engines.

“In the interest of residents of Oyo State, we decided on the latter and the people of the state felt the impact of our 21st-century public lighting network; available data showed a reduction in crime rates and the beginnings of a nighttime business economy.

“With supply chains now open, the transition to the initially scoped infrastructure has commenced with the installation of gas engines.

“As our gas installations continue please bear with us as we will try to minimise unavoidable fluctuations in the availability of the public lighting network.

“Let me add two things: (i) the Oyo State Government did not pay extra for the diesel and (ii) the IPP which is in its final stages will energise about half of the 300km public lighting infrastructure.

“Led by HE ‘Seyi Makinde, we planned and are on the road to sustainable development in our dear state and we will continue to take decisions we believe are in the best short, medium, and long term interest of the residents of Oyo State”, he explained.
