The government of Oyo State on Monday has called on Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and relevant stakeholders to help combat the problem of inappropriate refuse disposal, waste management and its impact in the environment in the state.
The Executive Assistant to the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Rev. Idowu Ogedengbe, stated this while speaking at an inaugural meeting on waste management, held at Mediation Center Hall, Secretariat Agodi Ibadan.
The executive assistant who welcomed all Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) present on behalf of His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, described the meeting as a follow-up to an earlier stakeholders engagement summit.
Recognizing the development responsibilities that CSOs play in our society, Ogedengbe stated that the collaboration was aimed at leveraging the networks of CSOs in Oyo State to help the government achieve its development goals.
He noted that while Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration has made great progress in the four pillars of education, health, security, and economic expansion, the government does not have all the resources to do everything on its own, therefore the collaboration.
The facilitation of increased knowledge, enlightenment, and instructive initiatives among the public to the grassroots on better hygiene and waste management, according to him, are areas where CSOs are expected to provide assistance.
He stated that two local governments have been selected under the pilot scheme for the collaboration. The two LGAs chosen for the purpose of waste disposal and street sweeping respectively are Akinyele and Oluyole LGAs.
The CSOs were also invited to partner with the government in its tree planting campaign, which is aimed at stemming the effects of climate change and promoting a more eco-friendly environment.
Mr Dayo Ogunbowale, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Communication, stressed the importance of regular radio and television programming on state-owned television and radio stations during his presentation.

He also stressed the importance of distributing waste management media briefings to all media outlets in the state.
Mr Alabi Moses, for one, encouraged the government to collect data on all waste management activities in order to bundle funding proposals.
Barrister Segun Olonade spoke on converting garbage to cooking gas as a way to empower people.
Dr. Oluwakemi Ademola Aremu discussed the health effects of medical and other hazardous wastes on the environment.
At the conclusion of the discussion, a five-point action plan and an agenda with timelines were established.
Honourable Josiah Olufemi, the Special Assistant on Community Relations; Rev Femi Ibikunle, the Special Assistant on Interfaith, Mr. Aderogba Adedigba; Coordinating Director & Acting Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, who represented the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Engr Afolabi; and the General Manager of the Oyo State Human Capital Development Office were among those who spoke at the meeting
