Oyo-born Ridwan Oyekola aka Scorpion, the current champion of the World Boxing Federation (WBF) super featherweight champion has narrated his ordeal after an attack from unknown gunmen not long after receiving a cheque of 10 million from the Oyo state governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde at the state Secretariat on Thursday evening.
Recounting his near-death ordeal after he left the hospital where he was admitted for treatment since the day of the incidence, yhe boxer stated that he and the two occupants in the vehicle escaped by God’s grace, on Thursday, 4th of March.
“As we left the government secretariat, the venue of cheque presentation, I wanted to drop a friend that accompanied me to the event at Mokola, I just saw a vehicle and it accosted us along NTA to Total garden area, and the two men were pointing guns at us to stop.
“I was shocked and swerved the car to escape them but fell into a ditch. The assailant drove off after noticing that the car had fallen off from the road”, said the boxing champ.
Meanwhile, Oyekola was in the company of another boxer, Habeeb ‘Ige’ Oladeji, the national bantamweight titleholder and a friend Adesina Sheriff in the vehicle. No serious injury was sustained except Ridwan who suffered shock, but he has been discharged from the hospital.
His manager and promoter; Sola Ayodele, the owner of Core Afrique Boxing Promotion (COABOX) has, nonetheless, begged the government to help in providing security details for the boxer, saying the criminals might still be having him in their crosshairs.
