A former deputy governor and governorship hopeful under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Oyo State, Hazeem Gbolarumi has expressed confidence that he will defeat Governor Seyi Makinde in the party primary election scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
Gbolarumi, while featuring on Fresh Fm’s Situation Room program in Ibadan on Tuesday said he is running to become the Oyo PDP gubernatorial candidate because Makinde, the incumbent governor, has failed woefully in managing the party faithful.
The former deputy governor, however, acknowledged that Makinde has done very well in providing good governance for the people of the state.
He further stated that he would use some of Makinde’s projects in the campaign if elected the party standard flag bearer in the 2023 election.
He said, ”I have the conviction that I will be the best and I am the best candidate for the party because of my experience. I started from somewhere, and I know what our people want. I am a grass root politician and I know everything that has to do with the masses.
”I know what to do with the party elders particularly. Because I believe the party should not be neglected for any reason because party is supreme.
”The governance supposed to be under the political party that nominated the governor. The governor will not say he is the umpire.
When asked how well Makinde has done in the area of governance,
he said ”If he is not fielded Nobody will vote for him, and you should know that a party or an organization fielded him in collaboration with the coalition parties and you should be able to note that when you are doing that they are all investing.
‘’Considering the fact that the people of Oyo state don’t need anything from Seyi Makinde than to provide infrastructure, electricity, security and good governance, so the party must be carried along, the party faithful must be carried along; they must be nominated appointed one position or the other because they all invested with what they have then. So, why must you neglect them? There is a classical Yoruba adage that says a river that has forgotten its source will definitely dry. He should be able to know that and I believe with the consent of Almighty Allah, I will defeat him tomorrow.’’
”I also of the opinion that he has done well in the area of governance,’’ Gbolarumi said.
He added that if the result of the primary election turns out not to favour him, he would accept it and embrace governor Makinde.
