Federal College of Forestry Ibadan Students Attacked Us First, Held Us Hostage — EFCC Reveals

The Economic and financial crimes Commission, EFCC, has refuted claims that they attacked students of Federal College of Forestry Ibadan. According to the EFCC, their operatives were on routine verification exercise of a surety: Azeez Kazeem Oluwakemi, on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, when they were attacked and held hostage by staff and students of the Federal College of Forestry , Idi-shin Estate, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Dele Oyewale, the Head of Media & Publicity for EFCC, the operatives were at the college to authenticate Oluwakemi’s address and identity. Oluwakemi had stood as a surety for Alakinde Khalid Kolawole, a suspected internet fraudster in EFCC custody. Such verification exercises are standard practice for ensuring the fulfillment of bail conditions for suspects.

Despite prior notification to the college community about the purpose of the EFCC team’s visit, the staff and students launched an unprovoked attack against them. The college’s Student Union President, along with other students and staff members, engaged in a violent confrontation with the EFCC operatives.

The situation escalated as two main entrance gates to the college were barricaded with a car belonging to one of the lecturers. The bus transporting the operatives was also vandalized, while students and staff threw stones and dangerous objects at the vehicle.

Fortunately, a rescue team managed to release the seven operatives who were being held hostage. It is important to note that the EFCC operatives showed restraint and did not use force against their attackers. They only fired shots into the air to disperse the unruly crowd, ensuring that no student or staff member was harmed.

The EFCC wants to assure the public that it will continue to carry out its duties in accordance with its mandate. The Commission will no longer tolerate unprovoked attacks against its personnel.
