Fear Sweeps Through Oyo State As Commissioner of Justice Contracts COVID-19

Fear has gripped the residents and workers of the University of Lagos, Akoka, as two more professors, including a law lecturer and incumbent Attorney General of Oyo State, Oyelowo Oyewo, tested positive for the coronavirus disease, according to reports.

This is coming after the country recorded a new high figure of confirmed cases announced on Wednesday evening by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The announcement stipulated that a total of 1,664 new cases, the highest daily figure the country has ever witnessed since the index case was first recorded on February 27, 2020.

The Attorney General has declined every available means of communication with him, and the chief press secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Taiwo Adisa, said, “I don’t comment on what I don’t know.”

In the light of this news, a top management official at the university, who chose anonymity due to the confidentiality of the matter, confirmed that both Oyewo and a professor of African History at the university’s department of history and strategic studies, faculty of arts, Rufus Akinyele, are carriers of the deadly virus.

However, Prof. Akinyele has been discharged from the isolation centre at the infectious disease hospital (IDH), Yaba, Lagos, and recovering at his official quarters on the campus. At the same time, Mr. Oyewo is self-isolating at an unknown location.

Oyewo was recently hosted and celebrated at an event to honour his attainment of a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
