Some enraged youth in Bashorun area of Ibadan, Oyo state on Friday, December 3, set an unknown suspected mobile phone thief ablaze.
The anonymous guy was first accused of taking a motorcycle, however trustworthy evidence revealed that what he and other suspected criminals stole from the owner was an android phone.
The phone’s owner, who requested anonymity, said the burned person and his fleeing colleagues had asked him for directions to Iwo road, and he indicated how to find it, only to be surprised later when the guy asked him to hand over his phone to them.
The phone’s owner reported that he initially rejected the thieves’ advances, but that he was forced to hand over the phone to them in a bid to save his own life.
He claimed that as soon as they seized the phone from him, they bolted, but one of them met his waterloo after failing to flee with the rest.
He claimed that when the enraged youngsters apprehended him, he was tortured violently before being set on fire.
In an interview with CSP Oyekan Afeez Alabi, DPO, Agodi Divisional Headquarters, Iwo Road, Ibadan Northeast local government area of Oyo state, he revealed that he and other members of the Nigeria Police Force on the axis tried everything they could to halt the jungle justice but were unable.
He emphasized that as soon as they were informed of the tragic event, they all sprung into action, and that as they were on the spot, they discovered that they had wrapped a tyre around his neck, doused him in gasoline, and set him on fire without listening to them.
The DPO, on the other hand, warned people against taking law into their own hands, emphasizing that jungle justice is a serious offense that men of the law and the country as a whole should not flirt with.
