The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Oyo State Command, has announced that 21 detainees from the Oyo Custodial Centre in Agodi, Ibadan, will take part in the National Examination Council in 2021. (NECO).
DSC Anjorin Olanrewaju, the command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), said this in an Ibadan statement on Tuesday.
Olanrewaju said the participating students whose first subject would be Agricultural Practical in the 2021 NECO were already in examination mood.
The NECO GCE examination for 2021 will begin on Monday, November 22 and conclude on Wednesday, December 22.
According to Olanrewaju, Ailewon Noel, the Controller of Corrections in Oyo State, advised the 21 learners to read well, avoid stressing during the examination period, and wished them luck on their examinations.
Ailewon reassured the students that they would succeed because they had been studying for the exam for some time.
The controller stated that being imprisoned was never a reason for not improving and developing oneself, and that they could be whoever they choose.
“Preparations have been ongoing for months towards getting the participants ready for the exams.
“Various NGOs and the NYSC have been assisting the Nigerian Correctional Service by sending professional teachers to the Agodi Centre to prepare the students for passing the examination.
“One of the 21 participating inmates is a female and registered to sit for Science subjects with four other male inmates while 14 students registered for Arts subjects.
“The remaining two registered for Commercial subjects,” Ailewon said.
He claimed that several acquitted Awaiting Trial Inmates who took advantage of the opportunity to write and pass the exam in the three years since the process began had since been accepted into various Nigerian colleges.
The controller stated that attempts to establish a National Open University (NOUN) center in the institution were nearing completion and would soon become a reality, adding that this would allow successful inmates to continue their education at the university level.
“This is in line with the mandate of the NCoS Act of 2019 that makes a sharp deviation from the punitive treatment of offenders to corrective and world best measures that will see them being reintegrated into the society,” he said.
